Position Summary

The Lighting Technician sets up, programs, operates, and maintains lighting equipment for performances, rehearsals, private gatherings, and special events. This role works closely with the production team to establish the right atmosphere, keep performers visible, and execute lighting cues accurately. Creativity, preparation, and attention to safety help bring each production to life.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review event plans, scripts, and lighting needs with directors, performers, and production staff.
  • Set up, position, and focus lighting fixtures using approved equipment and procedures.
  • Connect power and control cables, keeping work areas and walkways organized and safe.
  • Program lighting looks, scenes, transitions, and cues using the venue’s lighting console.
  • Adjust color, intensity, beam placement, and timing to support each performance.
  • Conduct equipment checks before rehearsals and events, resolving or reporting problems.
  • Operate the lighting console during performances and execute cues according to cue sheets and production direction.
  • Coordinate with audio technicians, stage management, performers, and event staff on timing and transitions.
  • Attend assigned rehearsals to refine cues and document changes.
  • Troubleshoot fixture settings, control connections, and other routine lighting issues within the scope of training.
  • Save, label, and organize show files, console settings, and cue documentation.
  • Maintain appropriate visibility for entrances, exits, and backstage movement.
  • Follow venue procedures for ladders, elevated work, electrical connections, and equipment handling.
  • Perform mounting or rigging tasks only when trained and authorized, and report concerns about equipment security or electrical loads.
  • Complete equipment shutdown, breakdown, and storage after events.
  • Inspect and clean lighting equipment, report damage or malfunctions, and communicate maintenance needs.
  • Keep technical workspaces and storage areas clean, organized, and ready for the next event.

Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of stage lighting equipment, basic lighting techniques, and control systems.
  • Familiarity with lighting consoles and DMX control; experience with ETC ColorSource systems is helpful.
  • Ability to program and operate lighting cues and troubleshoot common equipment issues.
  • An eye for color, focus, timing, and visual presentation.
  • Dependability, punctuality, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow scripts and cue sheets, take direction, and remain focused throughout performances.
  • Clear communication and a collaborative, professional approach.
  • Commitment to safe equipment handling and working within the limits of training.
  • Previous theatre, concert, or event lighting experience preferred.
  • Willingness to learn venue-specific equipment and procedures.

Schedule and Work Environment

Scheduling is based on rehearsals, performances, and event needs and may include evenings, weekends, and holidays. Shifts may include advance setup, programming, rehearsals, event operation, and breakdown. Work takes place in performance spaces with varying lighting conditions and amplified sound.

Physical Responsibilities

The role involves standing or sitting at a lighting console for extended periods, bending, reaching, and handling fixtures, cables, and other equipment. Some assignments may involve ladder use or elevated work when trained and authorized. Heavier equipment should be moved using appropriate equipment or team assistance. Essential duties may be performed with reasonable accommodation.

What Success Looks Like

Performers are clearly lit, lighting supports the mood of each event, and cues happen at the right moment. A successful Lighting Technician arrives prepared, communicates effectively, works safely, and leaves equipment organized and ready for the next production.
